About this place

Sungnyemun Gate, also called Namdaemun (South Great Gate), is a 600-year-old wooden gate between Namdaemun Market and Seoul Station that once guarded the capital and was designated National Treasure No.1. It survived wars and invasions until fire destroyed it in 2008, and traditional craftsmen then restored it over five years. The two-tiered structure, ringed by office towers, once received foreign envoys. Free guard ceremonies with Joseon-era soldiers in colorful costumes run daily except Mondays, starting at 10am and ending with the closing ceremony at 3:40pm, and guided tours are available.
