About this place

Gwanghwamun Square is a 600-meter plaza between the main gate of Gyeongbokgung Palace and Cheonggyecheon Stream, near Gwanghwamun Station (Line 5). It reopened in August 2022, twice its former size. Bronze statues of King Sejong the Great, creator of the Korean alphabet Hangul, and Admiral Yi Sun-sin, who fought off Japanese invasions, stand above museums about each man. The Waterway of History marks events between 1392 and 2008 with 617 stones, and the 12.23 Fountain is named after Admiral Yi's 23 naval victories.
