Independence Gate

Independence Gate (Dongnimmun) in Seodaemun Independence Park was built in 1897 of granite paid for by ordinary Korean citizens, and it stands 14.28 meters high. It was modeled on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. The gate replaced Yeongeunmun Gate, where Korean kings once bowed to Chinese envoys, and stone pillars from that demolished gate still stand at its base. The former Japanese prison is next door, entry is free, and Dongnimmun Station (Line 3, Exit 4) is a 5-minute walk away.
