About this place

Bongwonsa is a Buddhist temple at the foot of Ansan Mountain, a few minutes from Yonsei University, and the head temple of the Taego Order. It was founded in 889 AD and moved here in 1748. The 1,100-year-old temple still has 50 resident monks and lotus ponds, and its 3000 Buddhas Hall, built without nails, holds thousands of Buddha statues. Every June 6th, monks designated as Living National Treasures perform the UNESCO-recognized Yeongsanjae ceremony with ritual dances and chants.
