About this place
Wontongsa Temple is a Buddhist temple in the foothills of Dobongsan Mountain in Dobong-gu, founded in 863 AD by the monk Doseon during the Silla Dynasty. It is counted among Korea's protective temples. The main hall, Wontong-bojeon, was rebuilt in 1929 and holds statues of Amitabha Buddha, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva and Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva. Below the medicine hall is the Sanggong-am rock inscription, where, legend says, Taejo Yi Seong-gye, the founding king, prayed and dreamed of rising to heaven as a celestial minister.
