About this place

Jeoldusan Martyrs' Shrine, whose name means 'Beheading Hill', is a Catholic site on a cliff above the Han River, a 5-minute walk from Hapjeong Station. In 1866, during the Byeongin persecution, thousands of Korean Catholics were executed here, many thrown from the rocks into the river; 103 of the martyrs are canonized saints. Pope John Paul II visited in 1984, Mother Teresa in 1985. The grounds have gardens, a modern church with daily Mass, a crypt and a museum of torture tools, diaries and relics, and free guided tours run in several languages.
