Haebangchon

Haebangchon (Freedom Village) is a steep hillside neighborhood below Namsan Mountain, a 10-minute walk from Noksapyeong Station. It began as a refuge for North Korean migrants and war veterans after the Korean War. Lower rents have drawn artists and expats, and the streets hold international restaurants, rooftop bars with city views and the revived Shinheung Market for craft beer and street food. The 108 Heaven Stairway climbs marble steps to a wide view, murals cover the alleys, and the HBC Music Festival brings indie acts every year.
