About this place

The Statue of Peace in the North Plaza of Guro Station is a memorial to an estimated 200,000 women and girls forced into sexual slavery by the Japanese military during World War II, known by the euphemism "comfort women". The bronze statue, unveiled on August 15, 2016, shows a girl in hanbok sitting on a chair with clenched fists. Her short, uneven hair stands for childhoods cut short, and the empty chair beside her is there for visitors to sit and reflect. It is one of more than 50 such memorials across South Korea.
