About this place
The Banghak-dong Ginkgo Tree, below the tomb of King Yeonsangun in Dobong-gu, is an estimated 600 years old (older records say over 800), 24 meters tall and 9.6 meters around the trunk. It became Seoul's first protected tree in 1968, Seoul Monument No.33 in 2013 and Seoul Natural Heritage in 2024. Fires on the tree were said to come before national crises, which earned it the nickname "patriotic tree". Beside it is the restored Wondangsaem spring, and a community rite is held every year on the first full moon of the lunar year.
