Average wage calculator

Work out the Korean daily average wage used for severance pay and other benefits, from the last 3 months of pay, bonuses and excluded periods.

Reason and dates

The 3 months before this day are the calculation period.

Pay in the calculation period (before tax)

₩

If the pay was the same every month, enter it here. Each part is filled by its share of days; parts you edited stay as they are.

Periods to leave out (optional)

The days of these periods and the pay received in them are taken out of the calculation (Labor Standards Act Enforcement Decree art. 2(1)).

₩

Bonuses received in the 12 months before the reason arose. 3/12 of it is added, or 3 ÷ months worked if under 12 months.

₩

Only pay for unused leave that already became payable in the 12 months before. Leave pay that arises because of leaving is not included.

₩

If the average wage is lower, the ordinary wage is used instead (Labor Standards Act art. 2(2)). The ordinary wage calculator works it out.

How it is calculated

  • Average wage = total pay received in the 3 months before the day the reason arose ÷ the number of days in that period (Labor Standards Act art. 2(1)6). If employed for less than 3 months, that shorter period is used.
  • The period ends the day before the reason arose and lasts 3 months (89 to 92 days). For severance pay, the reason arises on the day after the last working day.
  • Probation (first 3 months), suspension for the employer's reasons, maternity leave, leave for work injuries, childcare leave, industrial action, unpaid military duty and approved leave are left out in both days and pay (Enforcement Decree art. 2(1)). If the whole period is left out, the 3 months before it began are used.
  • Bonuses paid in the last 12 months are added at 3/12 (3 ÷ months worked if under 12 months), and unused leave pay that was already payable at 3/12.
  • If the average wage is lower than the ordinary wage, the ordinary wage is used (art. 2(2)).
  • Severance pay, business suspension allowance, work accident compensation, the pay cut limit and unemployment benefits are based on the average wage.
